The Sailor’s Valentine originated as a way for sailors to not only express their love for wives and family, but to also while away the endless days at sea. Fashioned from varieties of colorful shells found during their travels, these beautiful mosaics were originally housed in wooden boxes and covered in glass. I first became aware of these highly collectible works of art early during our 10 year sojourns to Nantucket for the summer. Imagine my delight in finding these miniature versions of Sailors Valentines encased in vintage/antique pocket watches! An exquisitely detailed scrimshaw depicting a tall ship is the focal point of this unique pocket watch Sailor’s Valentine. This magnificent ship is surrounded by a painstaking arrangement of the most miniature shells in black & white and ruby red. A whimsical chain of chunky ruby nuggets with hand-coiled loops and black onyx rondelles are interspersed with whimsical hand-linked ivory freshwater stick pearls. The natural aging process of this antique watch case has happily created a blackened finish which is de rigueur this season; while amulets of petal pearls, ruby briolette and 24k gold vermeil seahorse carry out the lure of the sea .
